The Instructional Identity Crisis
The search for meaning is at the core of our personality as well as our own identity. Who are you as a teacher? How was that shaped? Environment and experiences play an important role in identity development. Master teachers have developed an instructional identity that has fit them well and helped their students be successful. Now what happens when the core of what you have built your identity upon suddenly changes or has evolved into something different? Changing your instructional identity is hard but necessary. We will explore common pitfalls that extend this identity crisis and how you as a teacher can avoid them and reshape that identity to something that works for you and your students.

How do we encourage a growth mindset amongst ourselves and our students? How can we help our students discover their hidden talents? Using Matthew Syed’s book “Bounce: The science of success” as a springboard, Sylvia will explore these questions while she describes her journey from non-artist to sketchnoting fanatic.
